Air traffic controllers fired on suspicion of rape

Two air traffic controllers have been fired from Isavia’s subsidiary, Isavia ANS, on suspicion of raping a student in air traffic control, Visir reported.

The two men were fired last week, they have been under investigation by the police on suspicion of sexually abusing a young woman after a party of employees in June last year. The woman is a 20-year-old student in air traffic control and the men are two experienced air traffic controllers in their fifties.

The police investigation has been completed and the case was sent to the district prosecutor, where it was dropped due to lack of evidence. That conclusion was appealed, however, and the case is now before the State Prosecutor.

Isavia confirms that the two men have been fired. It is said that they were initially transferred to work, but in light of the seriousness of the case, they were fired.

According to sources, the incident took place following a beer night at the air traffic controllers’ union in June last year and that the woman went to Landspítali’s emergency department immediately afterwards.

Staff meetings have been held this week due to the case and more meetings are on the agenda at Isavia ANS today and tomorrow. Isavia says that the person in question was offered psychological help.
