Loftleidir Icelandic, the aircraft charter and leasing arm of Icelandair, will have one aircraft located in Punta Arenas Chile this November to January season. Loftleidir with Icelandair will also have two flights from Oslo to Troll in Antarctica, Icelandair Communications Manager Guðni Sigurðsson told Flugblogg.

The first flight to Antarctica is planned for the first half of November 2021 on a Boeing 767-300ER, but it is pending weather and other conditions so the dates are more estimates. That’s why Sigurðsson said the tail number of the aircraft has not been confirmed yet. The plane will fly Between Punta Arenas and Union Glacier Antarctica.

The second stage of the project will start in December 2021 on Boeing 757-200. The aircraft with tail number TF-FIV already has got the tail logo of the Antarctic Logistics and Expeditions operator. Sigurðsson said the flights will be performed in favour of tourists, various South Pole expeditions, people trying to reach the pole by foot or other means and also for scientists.

In February 2021 Icelandair performed several flights between Oslo and Antarctica on Boeing 767. It was the first-ever landing of the Icelandair Boeing 767 on the continent. It was the first flight of Icelandair to Antarctica since 2015, when Icelandair’s daughter company Loftleiðir Boeing 757-200 landed at the Union Glacier Camp for Adventure Network International (ANI) test purposes.
